Baby chickens stomped to deathCruelty

AN investigation is under way into the killing of baby chickens stolen from a pet-food store and then stomped to death in north Queensland. A walker found the bodies of seven baby chickens and one baby turkey while on his morning walk at Jensen, north of Townsville, yesterday.

The man, who asked not to be named, said the chicks appeared to have been stomped to death. "They'd definitely been trod on, it wouldn't have been a dog that chomped them," he told AAP.

Taiwan zoo faces fine over 'liger' cubsZoos

Two newborn liger cubs - the offspring of a lion and a tiger - have been unveiled at a private zoo in Taiwan.

Animal rights groups have criticised the zoo's owner for illegally crossbreeding two different species of protected animals. According to the zoo three cubs had been born in the litter but only two survived.

Vets accused of over-vaccinating petsDomestic Animals

Consumer group Choice is warning that many Australian vets are ignoring guidelines and vaccinating pets unnecessarily.

Elizabeth Hart says she has spent the past two years urging vets to stop over-vaccinating dogs and cats. She believes an adverse reaction to a vaccination killed her pet dog Sasha in 2008.

Catalonia outlaws bullfightingEntertainment

Parliamentarians in Catalonia have outlawed bullfighting, becoming Spain's first mainland region to do so after a heated debate that pitted the rights of animals against preserving a pillar of traditional culture.

Cheers broke out in the local 135-seat legislature after the speaker announced the ban had passed 68-to-55 with nine abstentions. The ban in the northeastern coastal region including Barcelona will take effect in 2012.

Campbelltown animals shiver at the pound in winterDomestic Animals

WINTER is tough on the pups in the animal shelter in Rose Street, Campbelltown. Ambarvale school teacher Biancka Novak regularly visits the pound with her two children.

Mrs Novak says the pound caters well for the animals but that resource constraints have become a problem. "During the winter many dogs have to sleep on a wet concrete floor," she said.

Man fined for starving cattleCruelty

A 71-year-old man has been ordered to pay more than $50,000 after being found guilty of starving a large herd of cattle in the South-West.

Geoffrey James Mullins of Waroona was found guilty last month for failing to provide sufficient feed for a herd of 130 cattle between August and September last year. 12 animals died and others had to be put down.

Tip native animal slaughter continuesCruelty

More native animals have been slaughtered at a rubbish tip in Hobart's northern suburbs. The number of animals found clubbed, shot or savaged by dogs at the Glenorchy tip and nearby Tolosa Park has doubled in the past six weeks.

Council workers have found the carcasses of more than 200 wallabies and kangaroos. Some have been left propped against fences, others within metres of homes.

Activists oppose removal of wild horsesWildlife

ANIMAL activists are trying to stop the removal of wild horses from Lake Gregory to South Australia on the grounds that it is inhumane. The Department of Regional Development and Lands (RDL) said the number of feral horses on the Lake Gregory Pastoral lease had risen to more than 5000, causing significant environmental damage and they needed to be removed.

The leaseholder of Lake Gregory Station, The Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT), was ordered by the Pastoral Lands Board (PLB) to remove the feral horses by next week and is considering trucking them to South Australia but a final decision hasn't been made.

Burnt cat fighting for life: RSPCACruelty

A family cat is fighting for his life in Sydney after apparently being set alight in an incident described by the RSPCA as a callous act of animal cruelty.

Snowy, a 19-month-old domestic longhair, crawled back to his Bankstown home about 4am (AEST) on Saturday suffering severe burns to most of his body.

Green groups up in arms at duck shooting dealHunting

THE Brumby Government has struck a ''sneaky'' deal with shooters to allow duck hunting along hundreds of kilometres of the state's newly created Murray River Park, a development that has infuriated the environment movement.

Green groups say they will withdraw their praise for the new system of river red gum national and regional parks across northern Victoria - the government's biggest environmental achievement this term - because they feel betrayed by the last-minute concession to shooters.
