Go Vegan

Going vegan is the best action you can take to help protect animals. It is also significantly favourable for your health and the environment. It is estimated that a person switching from a diet which comprises of meat, dairy and eggs to a plant based diet will prevent the neglect, abuse and untimely death of approximately 100 animals a year.

A good choice for the animals!
Worldwide, billions of animals are raised and killed for human consumption in ways that would make your skin crawl. Animals including chickens, cows and pigs are confined in sheds, feedlots and cages by the thousands and forced to live under filthy and crowded conditions where disease is prevalent. They are denied even the basic freedoms such as fresh air, sunshine and being able to move freely.

They are also frequently subjected to agonising mutilations without pain killers or anaesthetic - these include giving cattle third degree burns during branding, cutting off pig’s tails and the ends of their teeth and cutting off the sensitive ends of chicken’s beaks. Castration and mulesing (a practice in which hunks of skin are cut away from a sheep’s backside) are also preformed without any pain relief.
Eventually, their worn out abused bodies will be sent to slaughter where they will be shackled upside down and have their throats slit. Incorrect stunning of animals means that some animals will be fully conscious while their throats are slit – some are burnt alive in tanks of boiling water during feather or hair removal.

Great for your health!
Meat, dairy and eggs are loaded with saturated fat, cholesterol and have no fibre. They are also frequently contaminated with dangerous bacteria including E. Coli and Salmonella which are responsible for many cases of food poisoning. The consumption of animal products has been linked with obesity, heart disease, diabetes and some cancers - By giving up animal products, and eating a plant based diet which is rich in vitamins, minerals and protective antioxidants - you can help reduce your risk of disease.

Best for the environment!
Farming animals for food is very intensive on the environment and has been identified by the U.N. as a major contributor to serious environment issues including global warming, deforestation, and air and water pollution. A 2006 report compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) concludes that animal agriculture contributes more greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere than all cars, trucks, ships and planes combined. By adopting a vegan diet, you are directly taking responsibility for the health of our planet.

So what are you waiting for?
If you are not already vegan, why not give it a go? You have everything to gain by giving animal products the flick! If you don’t feel you can give up all animal products immediately, try removing small amounts of animal products from your diet until you are meat, egg and dairy free! And remember, every time you choose vegan food; you are investing in the protection of animals, your health and our planet.

Tips to make going vegan easy:

  • Try rice, soy or oat milk as an alternative to dairy – use it in cooking, coffee or pour over your breakfast cereal.
  • Experiment with soy cheese on everything from sandwiches to homemade pizzas. Try Tofutti or Redwood!
  • Substitute dairy ice-cream with delicious and healthy soy ice-cream or fruit sorbet.
  • Give “mock meat” a go – It tastes great and is available from selected Asian grocery stores and supermarkets.
